Kate Shepherd’s large scale “Falling Cards” from 2005 is an example of the artist’s long term commitment to exploring the interaction of color, line and plane with a variety of media. For this work, the background is divided into multiple sections of fuchsia to distribute light throughout the composition. All lines were created by arrangements of sewing, thread which is detectable upon close inspection. Transparent overlapping planes are continually interrupted by blocks of color, forever frustrating a sure sense of dimensional space. Shepherd’s work is full of visual and process-based riddles, yet the riddles are all in service of creating a dynamic visual experience that is both powerful and quiet.
