GROVE calls on a strategy which appears often in the work, conferring proxy status on the words, verbal substitutes for the objects they represent. Maples and palms have the same basic characteristics (leaves, trunks, branches, roots), but they’re different species so they look different. Unlike trees, the textual counterpart is part of a linguistic system, not a scientific one. Unlike real palms and maples, the difference between the textual counterparts isn’t determined by evolution or environment, but by color, structure, and sequence of the letters.
