SWEET DREAMS is one of a 2012 series which makes a stab at abstraction. Instead of writing the phrase, “Sweet Dreams” with each letter next to the others, Rosen has stacked the letters on top of each other. The two rules that Rosen applied to this series are the following: the word or phrase must begin and end with the same letter, creating an object to be seen rather than a word to be read. The second rule is that the meaning of the phrase must refer in some way to its scrambled and illegible appearance. Thus, SWEET DREAMS, with its chaotic, fragmented mosaic of color, created by the outlined overlapping letters s-w-e-e-t d-r-e-a-m-s, does indeed suggest the surreality of a dream.
