“I made photographs illustrating Alice in Wonderland in 1998. Many years later during Covid I began a project making pictures of Lewis Carrols’ second Alice book: Through the Looking Glass. For both books Carrol hired John Tenniel to illustrate the stories, I find his illustrations unsurpassable! In the long period between the two projects my photographic tools changed from black and white film and darkroom prints, to color digital pictures and inkjet prints. I had also become a different man and artist.
Because Humpty Dumpty is such a big character in the book, I made three separate pictures of him. In this image I wanted to suggest an interesting view of his fall (which never happened in the story) in minimal and graphic terms with just wood and shadows much like in a shadow puppet theater.”
