Madame de Pompadour (nee Poisson)
1990
Limoges porcelain with silkscreen and handpainting

21 piece Tea/Breakfast Service in Yellow with six
cups, saucers and dessert plates; plus
teapot, covered sugar bowl and creamer.
Dimensions variable
Edition of 75
(Inventory #20068)
One cup, saucer and dessert plate and
teapot, covered sugar bowl and creamer shown.

For this project Cindy Sherman created a number of different Limoges porcelain objects. All are produced in a limited edition after the original design commissioned by the MADAME DE POMPADOUR (nee Poisson) in 1756 at the Manufacture Royale de Sevres.

Sherman’s image of herself as Madame de Pompadour has been transferred onto porcelain through a complex process which requires up to 16 photo-silkscreens. Each piece is silkscreened and painted at Ancienne Manufacture Royale, then individually signed and numbered.

The works in these editions are available in the traditional 18th century colors of apple green, rose, royal blue or yellow and are limited to 75 in each color version. Some colors of some of the editions are sold out.
