Deriving image from process, deriving form from image and deriving process from form are the guiding principles of “Derive”. The exhibition begins with the tour de force trompe l’oeil of Sylvia Plimack Mangold’s Paper Under Tape, Paint Over Paper, all created using etching and aquatint from four plates in olive green, pink, yellow ocher, and raw umber. Bookmarked between Mangold’s work and Robert Ryman’s 1990-1991 etching which lays bare the image of its making, is Richard Artshwager’s image-on-aluminum Corner Splat II. Closing the conversation is Stephen Antonakos’s 1977 Incomplete Square Suite that presents the ripped edges of the paper used in the making of the variants needed to complete the suite, along with a graphic translation of the artists light in space ideas.
